Kuwait hospitals on alert

16 Nov

According to the Kuwait Times Kuwait hospitals are on alert for possible outbreaks of swine flu (now known as H1N1)

Well, a worker from the hospital has anonymously spoken to the Kuwait Times…well that’s just silly because, aren’t hospitals ALWAYS on alert?

Of course, winter season is coming in, flu season hits us all hard so I think instead of reporting ‘silly’ things, the Kuwait Times would be better printing an article ADVISING the public to be on alert and INFORMING them of ways to stay safe…yani, wrap up warm, use hand sanitizer where possible and trash all used tissues.

Here’s some of the article

”Hospitals in Kuwait have been put on alert for a possible resurgence of the swine flu (H1N1) virus, according to a hospital official. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the staff member at a local state hospital told the Kuwait Times yesterday, “The hospital is on alert because there is one confirmed case [of swine flu], but I don’t want to mention where or what hospital the patient is being treated in right now.” The hospital worker added that a memo was recently circulated to all the country’s
hospitals advising all medical staff to expect possible swine flu cases, especially at the onset of winter.”

Thanks, SubwayMum!

Thanks to SubwayMum I got some very useful information this morning!

So, we all know, I’ve started my diet AND yes, I’m taking Lipo 6 which by the way is going ok. I have loads of energy, no sick feeling, no headaches and inshallah it will stay that way.

I was thinking of getting a treadmill, went last night, looked around and just didn’t see any that I liked. Nasser Sports in Salmiya had two. One was priced at 148 and the other 98. They looked quite bulky but the run strip just didn’t seem wide enough. Hubby tried them and agreed. We decided we would wait and check out the Sport’s shops up near Qurain. Anyway, this morning Subwaymum said, ‘why a treadmill? why not get a elliptical cross trainer? Treadmills are terrible for your knees! I had always assumed that a treadmill was best, nothing can shift fat like a good run. But, after some research I am wrong.

A quick comparison:

When you compare treadmills to elliptical trainers, you can’t help but notice that the elliptical trainer offers an impact-free workout. With the elliptical, there is no impact on the ground, which may appeal to people who need a gentler workout because of joint problems or pain. The treadmill offers more impact, which helps strengthen the bones.

One obvious point that is in favor of treadmills is that it provides a better training experience for a dedicated runner/jogger than an elliptical trainer. If you are training for a marathon or even a 10k, and you don’t want to go outdoors too often during the colder months, you are certainly better off with a quality treadmill.

That being said, if you are looking for a quality cardiovascular workout with the maximum amount of efficiency, the elliptical is an excellent choice. Most elliptical trainers give you a total body workout if you have dual action handlebars for your arms and foot pedals for your legs, whereas treadmills focus more on your lower body as they simulate the jogging experience.

So, there you have it…the cross trainer seems like a better choice.

Thanks, Subwaymom, you saved me my knees and a whole load of cash since the cross trainers are much cheaper too!

80% of Kuwait are OVERWEIGHT.

26 Oct

In a health session held today, organizers of the better health initiative gethealthykuwait.com announced that they found 70% of women suffered from high cholesterol levels and 48% of female students under the age of 18 were overweight.

– The main reason for female students under the age of 18 being overweight is the fact that they just don’t get out enough! Go walking! Stop getting your drivers to drive you everywhere! Stop sitting in Sliderstation! 6 mini burgers will do you no good whatsoever!!

As for the high cholesterol levels – do what I did this week! THROW YOUR SALT IN THE BIN! YOU DONT NEED IT!!! KUWAITIS USE FAR TOO MUCH SALT…just yesterday, one of my own family members admitted she adds salt to a salad! What is that all about?! I’m happy to say that that particular family member has lost about 10kilo and has thrown her salt out! All for a healthier lifestyle!

According to the World Health Organization, over 80% of Kuwait is overweight, while other studies show that 25% of people in Kuwait suffer from diabetes or its complications.
